Complete Umrah Packing Checklist for Pakistani Pilgrims (2026)
Last updated: 26 June 2026
Packing for Umrah isn't like packing for a beach holiday. The weather changes between Makkah and Madinah, your luggage has to fit Saudia's strict weight limits, and once you're in Ihram a forgotten item can become a fidya (penalty) issue. This guide is the same checklist we hand to our own departing groups — refined over hundreds of pilgrims.
Documents (carry-on, never checked)
If you only get one section right, make it this one. A lost document at Jeddah immigration can cost you a full day.
- Original Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) or e-Passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond return.
- Printed Saudi e-Visa (A4) — even though it's electronic, immigration officers prefer a paper copy.
- Yellow vaccination card showing meningococcal ACWY (mandatory) and current polio booster (mandatory for Pakistani nationals, valid 28 days–12 months).
- Hotel vouchers for both Makkah and Madinah.
- Air ticket printouts (e-ticket on your phone is allowed but officers still ask for paper).
- 2 passport-size photos (white background, 4×6 cm).
- Photocopies of all of the above kept in a different bag.
Ihram and clothing
Men's Ihram is two unstitched white cloths; women wear modest stitched clothing. Most pilgrims under-pack here and end up handwashing daily.
- Men: 2 sets of Ihram cloth (one to wear, one spare), Ihram belt with zipped pocket, plastic Ihram slippers (no stitching across the top), pin-free fasteners.
- Women: 3–4 loose abayas in breathable cotton, prayer scarves, comfortable walking shoes (not flip-flops — Masjid al-Haram floors get scorching).
- Casual loose cotton or linen for after Umrah — Makkah averages 38–42°C April through October.
- One warm layer for Madinah evenings (December–February dips to 8°C).
- Socks for prayer halls (the floor is cold from air-conditioning).
Toiletries — and what NOT to bring
In Ihram, perfumed soap and scented products are forbidden for both men and women. Always pack unscented versions for the Ihram period, scented for after.
- Unscented soap and unscented toothpaste (Sensodyne Original, Colgate Total Original).
- Unscented shampoo (sachet form to save weight).
- Toothbrush, miswak, dental floss.
- Nail clippers (you cannot cut nails in Ihram — pack for before and after).
- Vaseline (lips and feet crack from walking 5–10 km per day in dry air).
- Wet wipes — non-alcoholic, unscented.
- Universal travel adapter (Saudi uses Type G — UK 3-pin).
Medicine kit
Pharmacies are everywhere in Makkah and Madinah, but staff often don't speak Urdu and brand names differ. Bring a small labeled kit:
- Panadol / Paracetamol — pilgrims walk far more than they expect.
- Strepsils or similar — sore throat is the #1 complaint, caused by dust + AC.
- Anti-diarrhoea (Imodium) and oral rehydration sachets (ORS).
- Plasters for blisters, antiseptic cream, blister patches (Compeed-style).
- Personal prescription medicines — bring the original doctor's note, in original packaging.
- N95 or surgical masks — especially useful in tawaf crowds and during seasonal flu.
- Sun-block SPF 50+ (allowed during Ihram only if odorless).
Electronics
- Mobile phone — buy a Mobily, STC, or Zain SIM at Jeddah airport (around SAR 70–120 with data, ID required).
- Power bank (10,000 mAh is the carry-on limit) — Masjid al-Haram floors have no convenient outlets.
- Charger and cable for every device.
- Small zip-pouch waterproof bag for phone — useful for ZamZam splashes during Tawaf.
Money and payment
Saudi accepts USD widely at exchange counters but you'll get the best rates inside Makkah at Al-Rajhi exchange branches. Carry a mix:
- SAR 1,500–2,500 cash per person for a 14-day Umrah is a sensible buffer.
- One debit card that works on Mada / Visa / Mastercard — confirm international withdrawal with your Pakistani bank before flying.
- One backup card stored separately.
- Small SAR notes (5, 10, 20) for tips and street food — large notes are hard to break.
What NOT to bring
Saudi customs is strict. The following will be confiscated and may delay you 2+ hours:
- Alcohol of any kind (including mouthwash containing alcohol — pack Listerine Zero or non-alcoholic).
- Pork products or anything containing pork derivatives.
- Drones and powerful walkie-talkies.
- Religious books or items considered idolatrous.
- Strong vapes / e-cigarettes in large quantities — personal-use only.
- More than 60,000 SAR equivalent in undeclared cash.
Luggage rules — Saudia, PIA, Air Sial, Emirates
Most carriers serving Pakistan–Jeddah/Madinah allow 30 kg checked + 7 kg cabin in Economy. Saudia and PIA also offer a free ZamZam allowance (5L on Saudia, 5L on PIA) collected at Jeddah airport — do not pack ZamZam yourself.
Final pre-departure routine
- Cut nails, trim hair, shower the night before (Sunnah for Ihram preparation).
- Apply non-perfumed deodorant only after entering Ihram.
- Check Umrah visa expiry — Saudi Umrah e-Visas are now usually 90-day single-entry.
- Take a printout of your hotel address in Arabic — useful for taxis.
- Download Nusuk app, Tawakkalna app, and Google Maps offline maps of both Makkah and Madinah.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take ZamZam water in my checked luggage from Saudi Arabia?
No. Saudi customs and most airlines forbid passenger-packed ZamZam in checked or carry-on bags. Saudia, PIA, and Air Sial provide a free sealed 5-litre ZamZam allowance collected at Jeddah Airport's dedicated ZamZam counter after immigration.
How much luggage am I allowed on Umrah flights from Pakistan?
Economy class on Saudia, PIA, Air Sial, and Emirates from Pakistan to KSA generally allows 30 kg checked + 7 kg cabin. Business class is typically 40 kg. Always confirm with your airline at booking — Umrah season weight allowances sometimes vary.
Do I need to bring my own Ihram, or can I buy it in Saudi Arabia?
You can buy Ihram in any souq in Makkah and Madinah for SAR 30–80, but most pilgrims prefer to bring at least one set from Pakistan to wear at the Miqat. Many Pakistani airports (Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi) also have Ihram shops in the international departure lounge.
Are Pakistani polio boosters mandatory for Umrah?
Yes. Saudi authorities require all travellers from Pakistan to show proof of polio vaccination administered 4 weeks to 12 months before arrival. The booster is free at any government EPI centre in Pakistan. Bring the original yellow card to immigration.
Can women travel for Umrah without a Mahram?
As of 2022, Saudi Arabia permits women of any age to travel for Umrah without a Mahram. However, many pilgrims still travel in family groups or organised parties — both for comfort and to handle paperwork together.
What's the best small bag to use inside Masjid al-Haram?
A small zipped sling pouch or chest bag is ideal for phone, ID, cash, and prayer beads. Large backpacks are sometimes refused at certain Haram gates during peak times. Avoid loose pockets — Tawaf crowds make pickpocketing easy.
