Umrah

Best Months for Umrah from Pakistan (Weather, Cost & Crowds)

The question we get most often from first-time pilgrims is: 'When is the best time to go for Umrah?' The honest answer is — it depends on what you're optimising for. Cost-sensitive families avoid Ramadan and school holidays. Spiritually motivated pilgrims plan for the last 10 nights of Ramadan despite the price. Older pilgrims avoid the summer heat. This guide gives you everything you need to choose.

The three factors that matter

  1. Weather — Makkah can hit 45°C from June to August. Madinah is a few degrees cooler year-round.
  2. Cost — Ramadan and Hajj-adjacent months are the most expensive. November and late January are the cheapest.
  3. Crowds — Ramadan, school summer holidays, and winter break drive massive crowd density.

Month-by-month breakdown

January — Coolest weather, manageable crowds

Makkah averages 18–25°C. Madinah dips to 8°C at night. Hotel prices moderate. Best for elderly pilgrims, families with very young children, and anyone with health conditions affected by heat. Avoid early January — Pakistani winter school break creates a spike.

February — Best overall month

Mild weather, low crowds, lowest hotel prices of the year. If you have flexibility, February is our agency's most-recommended month. Many of our group leaders go themselves in February.

March — Mild but rising

Weather is comfortable (20–28°C). Prices start to climb as Ramadan approaches. Last 10 days of March can already see Ramadan pricing if Ramadan falls in early April.

April — Ramadan factor

Ramadan 2027 begins around Feb 17, 2027. Ramadan 2028 begins around Feb 6, 2028. When Ramadan falls in any part of April, prices triple. Outside Ramadan, April is warm (26–35°C) and moderate-crowd.

May — Pre-Hajj rush

Weather warming to 30–38°C. Some Pakistani Hajj pilgrims start arriving for early Hajj-related travel. Umrah visa rules tighten as Hajj season approaches. Avoid late May unless your Umrah visa is already issued.

June — Umrah visa blackout begins

Saudi typically stops issuing Umrah visas mid-May to mid-July. Temperatures soar to 40–44°C in Makkah. Madinah is a few degrees cooler but still hot. Not recommended.

July — Hajj month

No Umrah visas issued. Makkah is closed to non-Hajj pilgrims. Temperatures peak at 45°C.

August — Post-Hajj reopening

Umrah visa issuance resumes mid-August. Weather still 40°C+. Hotel prices reset (now empty after Hajj). For heat-tolerant pilgrims this is one of the cheapest months — but most Pakistani pilgrims wait for cooler weather.

September — Cooling and cheap

Temperatures fall to 35–40°C. Hotel prices low. Good combination of cost and tolerable heat. Madinah is noticeably cooler.

October — Sweet spot for value seekers

Weather drops to 28–35°C. Crowds light. Prices low. October is our second-most-recommended month after February for cost-conscious pilgrims.

November — Cheapest month of the year

Weather perfect (22–30°C). Hotel rates at their absolute lowest. Almost no Pakistani group travel — most agents have small private parties. If your top priority is cost-per-day, November wins.

December — Winter break spike

First half is similar to November. Second half (Pakistani school winter break) sees a 40–60% price spike. Weather excellent (18–28°C).

Ramadan Umrah — the special case

One Umrah in Ramadan equals one Hajj in reward (per the hadith). For this reason, Ramadan Umrah is in extraordinary demand. Pakistani pilgrims should know:

  • Hotel prices in Makkah tripled to quadrupled vs non-Ramadan months. A 3-star room near the Haram during last 10 nights can hit SAR 4,000+ per night.
  • Pakistani group packages for Ramadan Umrah sell out 4–6 months in advance.
  • The reward is greatest in the last 10 nights — but the crowds peak then too. Iftar inside Masjid al-Haram is unforgettable but logistically intense.
  • If you cannot afford Ramadan Umrah, the first 10 nights are far cheaper than the last 10.

Pakistani-specific timing factors

  • Pakistani school terms — winter break (mid-Dec to early Jan) and summer break (June–July) drive Pakistani family bookings. Avoid these windows for cheap rates.
  • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha — most Pakistani agents close their direct booking lines for 3–5 days around each Eid.
  • September school start — many Pakistani families finish summer Umrah in late August so children start school on time. Late August is therefore packed with Pakistani groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest month for Umrah from Pakistan?

November is consistently the cheapest month, followed closely by February. Hotel rates in Makkah can be 50–60% lower than peak Ramadan rates. Flights from Pakistan to Jeddah and Madinah also tend to be lowest in these months.

When does Saudi Arabia stop issuing Umrah visas?

Saudi typically halts Umrah visa issuance from approximately mid-Shawwal (mid-May in most years) to mid-Dhu al-Hijjah (mid-July). The exact dates shift each Hijri year. Umrah visas resume in late July or early August.

Is it safe to go for Umrah in summer (June–August)?

Saudi authorities and most Pakistani agents discourage summer Umrah for the elderly, those with heart conditions, and children under 7. Makkah hits 45°C, the Haram floor (despite shade) reflects heat, and dehydration is the #1 health risk. If you must travel in summer, schedule Tawaf and outdoor activities for after Maghrib.

Should I go for Umrah in Ramadan?

If you can afford it and physically handle long fasting plus high crowds, Ramadan Umrah is the most spiritually rewarding time of year — especially the last 10 nights. If cost or stamina is a concern, the rest of the year is also blessed; Umrah is virtuous in any month.

What's the weather like in Madinah vs Makkah?

Madinah is consistently 3–6°C cooler than Makkah year-round, and winter nights can drop to 6–8°C. Bring at least one warm layer if travelling November to February. Makkah, being at lower altitude and surrounded by mountains, traps heat more.
