UK Student Visa from Pakistan in 2026: Complete Guide
Last updated: 26 June 2026
Around 14,000 Pakistani students were granted UK Student Visas in 2024, making Pakistan the UK's 6th-largest student visa origin globally. The UK Student Visa process is well-documented but has tightened in 2024–2025 (with the 2024 Student Route reform stopping most students from bringing dependants). This guide is current to 2026 rules.
Step 1 — Receive an Offer from a Licensed UK Sponsor
You must first apply to and receive an unconditional offer from a UK university or college that holds a Student Sponsor Licence (verified at gov.uk's register of licensed sponsors). All major UK universities are licensed; private colleges should be checked.
Step 2 — CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
Once your offer is unconditional and you've paid the required deposit (usually 50% of first-year tuition), your sponsor issues a CAS letter — a unique 14-digit reference number issued via the UK Home Office system. You cannot apply for the visa without this number.
Step 3 — Meet the financial requirement
You must show you have:
- Full first-year tuition (varies by course — typically GBP 15,000 – 35,000 for international students)
- Living costs — GBP 1,483/month for London (12 months max) or GBP 1,136/month for outside London. So GBP 17,796 for London / GBP 13,632 for outside London.
- Funds held for 28 consecutive days before application
- Bank statement no older than 31 days at submission
Acceptable evidence: Pakistani bank statement, student loan letter from a regulated lender, parent's bank statement (with affidavit of support), or a sponsor's letter from a UK or recognised international scholarship body.
Step 4 — English language requirement
- IELTS Academic for Higher Education — typically 6.0 overall minimum, no band below 5.5 (varies by course; some require 6.5–7.5)
- Pakistani A-Levels grade C+ in English Language or HSSC equivalent may be accepted by some sponsors
- Approved alternative tests: Pearson PTE, TOEFL iBT, Trinity GESE/ISE, LanguageCert
- Tests must be taken at a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) centre
Step 5 — Apply online + book biometrics
- Complete the online application at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa
- Pay the visa fee: GBP 524 (~PKR 196,000 at 2026 rates)
- Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 776/year (~PKR 290,000/year) — for a 3-year UG degree, that's PKR 870,000+ upfront
- Book a biometrics appointment at VFS Karachi (Clifton) or VFS Islamabad (Blue Area)
- Attend in person with original documents
Step 6 — Documents to bring to VFS
- Passport (valid for whole duration of visa + 1 month)
- Original CAS letter (printed PDF acceptable)
- Original financial evidence (bank statements with stamp)
- Original English test certificate
- Original academic transcripts (some sponsors require these even after CAS)
- Polio vaccination certificate (mandatory for Pakistanis to enter the UK in 2024–2025)
- TB test certificate (mandatory for Pakistanis at IOM-approved Pakistani centres)
- Parent / sponsor affidavit (if relying on parent funds)
- Marriage certificate (if applying as dependant — but note 2024 reform limits dependants severely)
Processing time and fees
| Service | Time | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Standard processing | 3 weeks (mostly) | GBP 524 + IHS |
| Priority service | 5 working days | + GBP 500 |
| Super priority service | 1 working day | + GBP 1,000 |
2024 reform — dependants restriction
Since January 2024, UK Student Visa holders can NO LONGER bring dependants (spouse, children) on their Student Visa UNLESS they are studying a PhD or postgraduate research course. This is a significant change from pre-2024. Master's students with families are particularly affected.
Common rejection reasons
- Financial evidence not held for 28 consecutive days — the most common rejection. Even one day of dipping below the threshold restarts the 28-day clock.
- Bank statement older than 31 days at submission
- Discrepancy between sponsor's records and visa application (different course name, different intake date)
- Credibility interview failures — UKVI sometimes calls applicants for a phone or video interview. Inability to explain why you chose your course, university, or city is a frequent rejection ground.
- Forged or altered documents — instant 10-year ban
- Prior UK visa refusal not declared
- Missing TB test certificate (Pakistan is on the TB-screening list)
TB test in Pakistan — IOM centres
Pakistani applicants must complete a TB test at an IOM (International Organization for Migration) approved centre before the UK visa application. Centres in Pakistan:
- IOM Karachi — Defence area
- IOM Islamabad — F-7
- IOM Lahore — Gulberg
Fee: ~USD 75 (PKR 21,000). Certificate valid 6 months.
Working rights during study
- 20 hours/week during term-time if enrolled in a degree-level programme at a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance
- Full-time during vacation
- No work at all if you're studying below-degree level
- No self-employment, no agency work for sports professionals, no permanent full-time post
Post-study Graduate Route
After completing your UK degree, you can apply for the Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa) which lets you stay and work for 2 years (UG/Master's) or 3 years (PhD) without a job sponsor. This is the standard pathway from study to skilled work in the UK.
