Schengen Visa from Pakistan in 2026: Practical Guide

Last updated: 26 June 2026

The Schengen Area includes 27 European countries that share a common visa policy. A single Schengen visa lets you travel freely across all 27 — perfect for a multi-country European tour. But Pakistan's rejection rate at most Schengen consulates remains above the global average. This guide walks through doing it right.

Which embassy do I apply at?

You apply at the embassy of the country where you'll spend the most days. If you'll spend equal days in multiple, apply at the country of first entry. Examples:

  • 10 days France, 4 days Italy → French embassy
  • 5 days Germany, 5 days Netherlands, entering via Frankfurt → German embassy
  • 5 days Spain, 3 days France, 2 days Italy → Spanish embassy

Where to apply in Pakistan

Most Schengen embassies in Pakistan outsource application collection to VFS Global (commercial counters in major cities). The applicant submits at VFS; the embassy decides.

Documents required (universal Schengen checklist)

  1. Completed Schengen visa application form (downloaded from the consulate website, filled in by hand or online)
  2. Two recent biometric-spec photographs (35 × 45 mm, white background)
  3. Passport valid 3+ months beyond the visa's expiry, with 2+ blank pages
  4. Copy of passport bio page
  5. Confirmed return flight reservation (do NOT buy a ticket; book a refundable reservation)
  6. Confirmed hotel bookings or invitation letter from a host in Schengen
  7. Travel itinerary (day-by-day plan)
  8. Travel insurance covering EUR 30,000 minimum, valid across the entire Schengen Area, for the entire trip duration
  9. Proof of accommodation (hotel, Airbnb confirmation, or signed invitation from host)
  10. Financial evidence: last 6 months bank statement (showing balance + activity), salary slips (if employed), tax returns
  11. Employment letter (NOC) from your employer stating leave dates, position, salary
  12. If business owner: company registration, recent business bank statement, FBR tax registration
  13. If student: enrollment certificate + parent's financial guarantee
  14. Marriage certificate (if travelling with spouse)
  15. Birth certificates of children (if travelling with children)

Visa fee

  • Adult (12+): EUR 90 (~PKR 33,000 in 2026)
  • Child (6–11): EUR 45
  • Child (under 6): Free
  • VFS service charge: ~PKR 4,500–6,500
  • Optional courier return: PKR 1,500

Processing time

Standard Schengen processing is 15 calendar days. Peak summer season (May–August) can extend to 30+ days. Some consulates offer expedited processing for genuine emergencies (close family illness, funeral) with documentary proof.

Why Pakistani applications get rejected

  1. Weak financial profile — Schengen consulates expect 6 months of consistent bank activity matching your stated income. Sudden large deposits in the month before application raise red flags.
  2. No strong ties to Pakistan — they need to believe you'll return. Family, employment, property, and ongoing business in Pakistan are 'ties.' Young single applicants without these often face suspicion.
  3. Unclear travel purpose — vague answers like 'sightseeing' without a specific itinerary suggest applicants haven't actually planned the trip.
  4. Insufficient travel history — first-time international travellers from Pakistan face more scrutiny. A history of short visits to Saudi (Umrah), UAE, Turkey, Malaysia helps establish travel patterns.
  5. Previous visa overstay or refusal — automatic high-risk flag.
  6. Documents that look fabricated — bank statements without bank stamps, employer letters on plain paper, hotel bookings from obscure websites.
  7. Travel insurance not Schengen-compliant — must explicitly cover the Schengen Area (not 'worldwide excluding North America' for example).

How to strengthen a Pakistani Schengen application

  • Show a 6-month bank trend, not a one-month spike
  • Provide salary slips, tax returns, NTN certificate, and bank-stamped statements
  • Be specific in your cover letter — name cities, dates, and specific museums/attractions you plan to visit
  • Book a refundable hotel via Booking.com (free cancellation) — confirms intent without locking funds
  • Get an NOC from your employer in plain English on company letterhead
  • Show ongoing commitments in Pakistan — children's school enrollment, ongoing university enrollment, business obligations, property documents
  • If you have any prior travel history to Saudi, UAE, Malaysia, Turkey, Thailand — include those passport stamps

2024–2025 changes

  • EU is rolling out the EU Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for visa-exempt travellers (not Pakistanis — Pakistan still requires a full Schengen visa)
  • Visa fees increased EUR 80 → EUR 90 in June 2024
  • Several embassies now require online appointment booking weeks in advance — start early
  • Multiple-entry visas are being granted more often after a successful first single-entry trip

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Schengen visa cost from Pakistan in 2026?

EUR 90 (~PKR 33,000) for adults, EUR 45 for children 6–11, free under 6, plus PKR 4,500–6,500 VFS service charge. Optional courier return adds PKR 1,500.

How long does a Schengen visa take from Pakistan?

15 calendar days for standard processing. Peak summer (May–August) can extend to 30+ days. Start the process at least 6 weeks before your intended travel date.

Which is the easiest Schengen country to get a visa from?

There is no single 'easiest' embassy; all Schengen embassies use harmonised criteria. However, France and Italy generally process Pakistani applications faster than Germany. The Netherlands has slightly higher rejection rates for Pakistani applicants. Apply at the country where you'll spend the most days — that's the rule, not a strategy choice.

Can I work on a Schengen visit visa?

No. The Schengen visa is for tourism, family visit, business meetings, or short conferences. Working requires a separate work visa from the specific Schengen country.

Do I need travel insurance for Schengen visa?

Yes, mandatory. Must cover EUR 30,000 minimum across the entire Schengen Area for the entire trip duration. Reputable Pakistani providers: EFU, Adamjee, IGI, Jubilee. Cost: PKR 1,500–4,000 for a 2-week trip.

Can a single Pakistani citizen get a Schengen visa easily?

It's harder but not impossible. The key is demonstrating strong ties to Pakistan (employment, ongoing studies, family, property) and providing a detailed itinerary with confirmed reservations. Single applicants with travel history to Saudi (Umrah), UAE, or Turkey have noticeably better outcomes.
